Scratch Render

Recently adopted by major housebuilders such as Persimmon and Barratt Homes, scratch render is a relatively new process that became popular across Europe about ten years ago as a result of it’s faster application, low maintenance and hard-wearing finish. The through-coloured cement-based render has a finish that looks similar to weathered stone. When applied to a building’s external surfaces, they are made to look plaster flat by being  ‘scratched’ with a nail float to create a decorative, superior-quality finish.

One of the major advantages of a scratch render is that the finished surface is very hard-wearing, so that the colour doesn’t fade and can be power-washed to looking as good as new after many years of exposure. Scratch renders also have significantly higher insulation and waterproof properties than you will find in traditional renders, whilst still allowing the structure to breathe.

Another advantage is that the one-coat requirement means faster application with shorter programme periods, thereby reducing associated scaffolding and site costs and allowing the completion of ground works at an earlier stage. Scratch render has been designed for spray application and can be applied up to 28mm thick in two passes. Manual application is also possible.

Woodman Brothers use a variety of scratch renders from Weber, Marmorit and K Rend.  Previous projects including Leigh Park (detailed below) had specified Weber.pral M Monocouche render, this is commonly detailed on Barratt & Persimmon Home sites.   Weber.pral M comes available in a range of 6 standard and 18 special colours. Specifiers should consult the weber Colour Chart and, whenever possible, obtain samples prior to specification. We also have experienced advisors to provide on-site advice both at the specification stage and during application. Detailed specifications can be provided for specific projects or more general works. Site visits and on-site demonstrations can be arranged on request.
